Where Can I Get a Cat to Show?
First, you will need permission from your parents to own a cat. It will need to be an indoor cat and your family must be able to provide proper veterinary care such as vaccinations and check-ups. On average cats live about 12 to 14 years, and some as long as 18 to 20 years. This is a long-term commitment to an animal that will become a part of your life.
You will be responsible for loving and caring for your cat. You must have time to feed and provide fresh water for your cat daily, as well as have a regular grooming routine. You must also keep the litter box clean by scooping daily, plus changing the litter frequently.
If you and your parents decide you may own a pedigreed cat, there are two people who can help you find one. Emily Turner is the Chairman of the Junior Showmanship Committee and you can call her at 407-880-6684. Kitty Angell is Junior Showmanship Liaison to the CFA Board of Directors and you can call her at 281-292-7308. Both ladies will ask you a number of questions such as, "Do you want a longhaired cat or shorthaired cat? Do you have enough time to take care of a cat? Will you groom your cat and try to keep your cat in good health?"
You can also attend CFA cat shows and talk to breeders at the shows about getting a cat from them. Seeing the cats in person will help you decide which type of cat you like. You will be able to tell a little more about the personality of the cat and the breeders will talk to you about taking care of that particular breed. CFA also has a "Cat Breeder Referral Service", that will help you to find breeders in your area.
